Girl Friday Breakfast Club with Alex Roberts on 30 August 2024

Join us for the Girl Friday Breakfast Club with artist, Alex Roberts, on Friday 30 August at 8am online.

Alex Roberts is a painter who focuses upon how we perceive identity, change, and encounters. Testing the sliding scales of figuration and abstraction, her visual language travels between observation and material play. She engages with paint and translucence, addressing paintings’ surface, layers, and spatial depth by effecting colour and immediacy of marks. Alex also intermittently curates art exhibitions and platforms of exchange which seek to examine how painting beholds the viewer.

Alex completed her MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts after previous study at the University of Arts London in 2D Digital Design for Communication, following a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Reading. Alex exhibits internationally, with work recently included in: Once Guarded, KHBStudios Berlin Art Week (2022); With Love II, Paint Talk; TORN TEN, TORN Contemporary (2021); Wells Art Contemporary 2020 UK; Happy Hour, Kristin Hjellegjerde - London Bridge (2019); PaintLounge BERLIN; The Performativity of Painting, The Stephen Lawrence Gallery, Greenwich University Galleries (2018); Control to Collapse, Blyth Gallery; St. Paul’s Cathedral; What Hat am I Wearing Today? Paul Abbott and Alex Roberts, MOCA London; Connect: Katowice, Rondo Gallery Katowice, Poland (2017). Alex lives and works in Berlin and Dundee and is the Lecturer in Drawing at Duncan Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee, and Visiting Lecturer at Bauhaus Summer School, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Mediadesign Hochschule für Design und Informatik, University of Applied Sciences Berlin. Alex's current curatorial project - Gestural Reflective & Inquiring Tales (G.R.I.T.) - is centred around an exhibition of fourteen painters, which explores how gesture and its physicality engage both the maker and the viewer. The contributing artists tackle some of the core principles of contemporary painting, and G.R.I.T. contextualizes art as a collective practice which, at the same time, requires deep contemplation. With international contributors, the show aims to bridge Europe, and is currently on show on at KUNSTPUNKT in Berlin, and will then be presented at Drawing Projects UK in Dundee, Scotland. Through those two instalments, the project develops a model for sustainable artistic exchange. Beyond the exhibition, G.R.I.T. includes symposia as well as a public program, and the project aims to further discourse with a publication. See: https://www.paintinggrit.com

Anita Taylor is an artist, curator and educator, and convenes the Girl Friday Breakfast Club. She is the founding Director of the annual international Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize [since 1994], and Drawing Projects UK, a public-facing initiative dedicated to drawing and contemporary art [since 2009]. She is currently Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design at the University of Dundee.

The Girl Friday Breakfast Club was established by Professors Kate Reynolds and Anita Taylor in 2018 to provide a friendly and informal space for women to meet and to hear from an interesting woman speaker over breakfast at Drawing Projects UK on the last Friday of each month. We held our first online Girl Friday in October 2020, after realising we had longer to go before we could gather again for breakfast due to lockdown, and have continued in this format. We aim to retain the informal format online, and events are not recorded, so do book to join in - and bring your own breakfast - or lunch or supper depending on where you are in the world! All women, and those who identify as women, are welcome to join the Girl Friday Breakfast Club.
