Join us online for the Girl Friday Breakfast Club with Sophia Yadong Hao on Friday 28 July 2023 at 8am (UK time), convened by Anita Taylor.

Sophia Yadong Hao is Director & Principal Curator of Cooper Gallery, DJCAD, University of Dundee and a Visiting Professor at the University of Sunderland. A curator, writer and editor, Hao’s practice appropriates a rhizomatic approach to situate the curatorial as a mode of critical inquiry directly engaging with culture and ‘the political’ as an open question. Hao has curated contemporary art projects internationally, notably NOTES on a return (2009), a re-contextualisation of performance art from 1980s Britain; Of Other Spaces: Where Does Gesture Become Event? (2016-2017) which evoked the ethos of feminism for an alternative politics in culture and society; and CURRENT: Contemporary Art from Scotland (2015-2021) a touring programme in China interrogating contemporaneity in a global capitalist context. Since 2021, Hao has conceived and curated The Ignorant Art School: Five Sit-ins Towards Creative Emancipation, a five phase exhibition programme examining histories and future possibilities of creative pedagogy as a radical emancipatory praxis emphasising knowledge as a collective social experience. Founding editor of the art journal &labels, Hao’s publications include Of Other Spaces: Where Does Gesture Become Event? (2019), Hubs and Fictions: On Current Art and Imported Remoteness (2016, with Edgar Schmitz), A CUT A SCRATCH A SCORE (2015) and NOTES on a return (2010). Sophia was a member of British Art Network Steering Group until 2022.

Anita Taylor is an artist, curator and Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) at the University of Dundee. She is the founding Director of the foremost annual drawing exhibition in the UK, the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize [since 1994], and Drawing Projects UK, a public-facing initiative dedicated to drawing [since 2009].

The Girl Friday Breakfast Club was established by Professors Kate Reynolds and Anita Taylor in 2018 to provide a friendly and informal space for women to meet and to hear from an interesting woman speaker, eat breakfast and drink great coffee or tea together at Drawing Projects UK on the last Friday of each month. We held our first online Girl Friday in October 2020 after realising we had longer to go before we could gather again for breakfast due to lockdown. We aim to retain the informal format, and events are not recorded, so do book to join in - and bring your own breakfast - or lunch or supper depending on where you are in the world! All women, and those who identify as women, are very welcome to join the Girl Friday Breakfast Club.

Tickets: There is an Annual Season Ticket option for the Girl Friday Breakfast Club that runs until 29 March 2024. The Annual Season Ticket enables you to attend all of the online Girl Friday Breakfast Club events that are held during the 2023/24 season. Single tickets for this event only are also available. Further information and booking here.

Joining the online event: Please note that the Zoom link to join this event will be made available in the online event information that you will find once you have registered for the event - you will need to log into Eventbrite to find this. You will then either need to click on the joining link OR copy and paste the link into your web browser to join the event on the day.

We look forward to welcoming you!
