On Friday 28 January 2022, our Girl Friday Breakfast Club speaker will be the artist Emma Douglas. Please join us online at 8:00am (UK-time) by registering here.

Emma Douglas (b.1956 London, UK) studied BA Fine Art at Middlesex Polytechnic (1976-79) and MA Printmaking at Royal College of Art (1980- 83). Selected group exhibitions include: Small is Beautiful, Flowers Gallery, London (2014); Jerwood Drawing Prize 2015, London and UK tour (2015-16); Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London (2018). Selected solo exhibitions include: Boo’s Closet, London (2021); Norwich Cathedral, Norwich (2018); Saint Joseph’s Hospice, London (2017). Emma lives and works in London, UK.

Emma currently has a solo exhibition at Arusha Gallery, 46 Great Titchfield Street in London until 24 January 2022, and also has a drawing included in the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2021 exhibition, which is currently on show at Drawing Projects UK until 5 March 2022, where it is supported using public funding by Arts Council England.

Her drawing, First Shunt, 2021, is made with watercolour, ink and pencil on paper, 29 x 39cm. Emma says of her drawing: "Since my son Cato died in 2010 my work has evolved into a project recording the marks he made during his life, both physically and emotionally, the places that we visited and the images that linger after someone has left. I have also been developing a hieroglyphic language relating to his life. This image, First Shunt, is the scar that resulted from his first operation when he was 3 months old."

The Girl Friday Breakfast Club was established by Kate Reynolds and Anita Taylor in 2018 to provide a friendly and informal space for women to meet and to hear from an interesting woman speaker, eat breakfast and drink great coffee or tea together at Drawing Projects UK on the last Friday of each month. We held our first online Girl Friday in October 2020 after realising we had longer to go before we could gather again for breakfast due to lockdown. We aim to retain the informal format, and events are not recorded, so do book to join in - and bring your own breakfast - or lunch or supper depending on where you are in the world! All women, and those who identify as women, are very welcome to join the Girl Friday Breakfast Club.
